Alfalfa prefers damp, rich soil with sun/shade mix.

Aloe grows well in well-drained soil with a mingling of light and shade

Anise grows best in hilly areas with good drainage and sunlight

Asparagus prefers loamy soil laden with clay in partial sunlight.

Basil requires rich soil and plenty of sun. Transplant only after last frost.

Bay requires well-drained soil and partial sun. Sow from cuttings.

Bayberry thrives with rhododendrons nearby, especially in sandy soil.

Beans, though fairly hearty, cannot be planted when there's a risk of below-the-soil-line frost.

Cabbage required fertile soil, plenty of sun and regular watering to keep the roots damp.

Carnations like sandy soil and partial sun.

Carrot prefers well-aerated soil with sun/shade mixture.

Celery thrives best in damp or wet soil.

Chamomile prefers dry or sandy soil with plentiful sun.

Chive prefers rich soil with good drainage in full sun.

Chrysanthemum grows well in open spaces, especially when watered bi-weekly.

Daisy enjoys moist soil and requires a bed of straw for winter.

Dill likes moist, good soil with plenty of sun.

Fennel requires average soil with good drainage. Full sunlight is recommended.

Ginger requires good soil with good drainage and some shade.

Horseradish needs good, moist soil with plentiful sun.

Jasmine needs a warm environment and loam-rich soil.

Lavender likes well- aerated and drained soil with plentiful sunlight and a bit of lime.

Lilac needs soil high in acid and plentiful space.

Magnolia fares best in warm climates where the soil is rich but the sunlight is not direct.

Marigold tolerates a lot of conditions, as long as its planted after the last threat of frost.

Marjoram needs well-drained, but damp soil that isn't overly packed in partial sunlight.

Mint likes rich, well-drained soil with partial shade.

Nasturtium requires just average soil, but it needs to be well drained and in full sunlight for best yield.

Nettle thrives in a temperate climate and requires little fuss.

Onion fares best north of the equator and can tolerate a variety of soil/sun conditions.

Oregano needs average soil with good drainage and plentiful sun.

Pansy likes sandy soil out of the reach of direct sunlight.

Pumpkin prefers hot weather but can grow well in a variety of soil and sunlight levels.

Radish likes warm weather, it is a good window-box vegetable.

Raspberry prefers light well drained soil with humus mixed in.

Rose thrives in partial clay soils, especially if pruned in the spring.

Rosemary needs well-aerated dry soil, with good drainage and partial sunlight.

Sage requires good soil that's well drained and in full sunlight.

Savory likes lightweight, well-drained soil in full sunlight.

Strawberry prefers cool climates and damp soil but fares in a variety of regions nonetheless.

Tarragon likes sandy, drained soil in partial sunlight.

Thyme prefers lightweight, drained and chalky soil in partial sunlight.

Tomato enjoys even watered soil with potash, it is a very durable plant.

Violet prefers rich soil with humus in partial sun.

Watermelon likes warm weather and well-fertilized soil that's watered regularly.

Willow thrives in cool climates in damp soil.
