The Pentacle
(from the book The Craft by Dorothy Morrison)

There is a difference between the Pentagram and the Pentacle.  The Pentagram is a 5 pointed star with a geometric shape in the center. Now the Pentacle or star is encased within a circle. Worn by many Wiccans as a symbol of thier craft you can see it almost anywhere, on tarot decks to posters. It symbolizes the Earth and it full bounty. For instance have you ever noticed that the bright red Texaco Star isnt a star at all it is a Pentacle!

The Pentagram is a much maligned symbol, and hated by most of society as being a part of horrifying terros and child sacrifices.

Drawn with one point up, the pentagram has many meanings. It can represent mind over matter with the upper point symbolizing the practictioner and the other four points the Elements.  In the early days of Christianity is was used to represent the 5 wounds of Christ.

The pentagram has for thousands of years been seen as a protective device and is used as such. Satanist of course have taken the pentagram and changed its uses to fit what they want it for. The pentagram itself is not evil, but those that use it at times can be :( but the choice to do so is theirs.

Modern witches offen corrolate each point with something specific the top point being *Spirirt* or *Ether* Moving clockwise from this point the right top point is the element of Air, and the seat of human intellect, the right bottom point is the Earth and material concerns, the left bottom point is Fire and passion, and the left top point is Water and the seat of our emotions.
